St Maarten's Deep Sea Fishing Grounds
Known in the fishing world as the famous "Marlin Boulevard", which is situated north east of St Martin, this is the home of the Marlin gamefish. Large Marlin can be caught here and the current record is 781 lbs! Blue water anglers will have a great time fishing these waters. It is quite common to land a fish about 300 lbs or more. The same lure baits are used for Marlin, Dorado, wahoo, barracuda and tuna.
Spring is a popular time for the sailfish in the waters around St Maarten. The season for Blue Marlin starts in March and is good all through the summer.
Mahi Mahi (Dorado) season is the same time period, along with blackfin tunas, and yellowfin. The Wahoo season starts in November, and lasts for around seven months.
SEE SOME OF THE FISH IN ACTION!
The drop off at La Samanna on the south west side of St Maarten is the best spot for blackfin tuna and wahoo from it's peak at 200 feet to roughly where it ends at around 600 feet. Wahoo are known to feed at depths of 200 feet. Another drop off is near Simbars on the western side of the island. On the northeast side of the island the drop off is much further out at approximately 23 miles, so most anglers prefer to fish on the south side.
A day trip around 30 miles out and behind Saba gives excellent fishing at the Tuna Shoals. Here you will find big seas and big fish too.
Typically the wind is about 15 knots in this region with temperatures cooling down in December and January.
It's not uncommon to sight sperm whales, bottlenose and humpback whales whilst out on a fishing trip, and these mammals can be up to three times bigger than our boat so it's always very exciting when we spot the whales on a fishing trip.
